Autumnal equinox (one of the twenty-four solar terms)
The autumnal equinox is the sixteenth of the twenty-four solar terms, and the fourth solar term in autumn. Fight refers to oneself; the sun reaches 180° of the yellow longitude; it meets every year on September 22-24 in the Gregorian calendar. On the autumnal equinox, the sun is almost directly at the earth’s equator, and day and night are equal in length all over the world. The autumnal equinox means “equal” and “half”. In addition to the equinox of day and night, it also means that autumn is divided equally. After the autumnal equinox, the location of direct sunlight shifts to the south, the days in the northern hemisphere are short and the nights are long, the temperature difference between day and night increases, and the temperature drops day by day.
The autumnal equinox was once a traditional “Moon Festival”, and the Mid-Autumn Festival evolved from the Qixi Festival. On June 21, 2018, the State Council issued a reply on agreeing to establish the “Chinese Farmers Harvest Festival”, agreeing to establish the annual autumn equinox as the “Chinese Farmers Harvest Festival” starting in 2018. The festival activities mainly include art performances and agricultural competitions.
