KYF and Kombo Local Government Join Forces to Provide Better Services

At the recent inaugural meeting at the Brikama District Board of Education, stakeholders expressed optimism that the partnership will lead to greater collaboration and exchange of experience among local governments to create a strong community.
Meeting Chair Famara Buli Sanyang called on VDC members to show a strong commitment to partnership. He said bringing all VDCs into Kombo would provide much-needed collaboration to transform community development.
The Local Government Act 2002 allowed the establishment of village development committees. Council members are unanimously elected by the members of the community to guide the development of the village. Under the 2002 Act, the VDC is the starting point for community development and Alkalolu acts as an advisor.
Kombo General Secretary Yiriva Kafo stated at the meeting, “We believe that the important VDC members in Kombo should come together and build a network to complement the joint development efforts of Kombo.”
He said the KYK was conceived as early as January 2017, held its first meeting in Brufut, South Kombo in February 2017, and was registered with the Attorney General’s Office in June 2017 after the drafting of the constitution. “Constitutionally, KYK is a non-partisan political organization that will work with the government and all relevant stakeholders to promote the development of Kombo.”
Section 92(1) of the Local Government Act 2002 permits the establishment of a village development committee for each village or group of villages as determined by the local council. Article 92, paragraph 2(2), also authorizes each council to determine which groups of villages can collectively form village development committees based on the criteria it determines.
KYK was founded by former Vice President Fatumatta Jallow-Tambajang on October 7, 2017 and held its first and second annual general meetings in 2018 and 2019. But subsequent meetings have been postponed due to the impact of Covid 19.
Deputy Director of the Prosecutor’s Office Abdul Mayta Yusuf asked the court to give them more time to bring charges against the eight (8) alleged conspirators.
Yesterday, Karpowership Energy presented five ventilators worth about AED 6 million to the Gambian government.
